Apollo wins Bullion Open Tennis Title!
Apollo (right) won his second singles title by defeating Danny (left) in a tantalizing 3-6, 6-3, 5-5 tie break 6-4 victory in the 2005 Bullion Open Tennis Open Category. Apollo was tested during the group match when he lost his first match to Beng Koon (BK) who was the most senior player in the tournament.
Having put that first defeat aside, he defeated Jayson to keep his hopes alive. Needing wins to secure his passage to the next stage, (as he had already one defeat in hand) he kept his nerves to win a crucial match against Leo of Bullion Park.
He went on from strength to strength taking out the tournament's 2nd seed player Carl, whom he has never beaten before in open play in their numerous encounters during practice sessions to advance to the quarter finals. This was the highlight of the tournament as Carl had earlier lost to Danny and was thus eliminated from the tournament. That match had to however be decided in a gruelling tie breaker which Danny prevailed.
Said Apollo, "A win against Carl, was not only a big morale booster, but to me, the win was just as good as winning the tournament itself. I have the most utmost respect for Carl as he is one of the best players in the Regentville tennis team, however maybe it was just my day..."
Indeed that win, against Carl was a nail biting affair to the finish. The final set had to be decided in a heart breaking tie breaker which Apollo won.
Next Apollo had to face his old rival Beng Koon whom his lost to in the group stages. It was a two game quarter finals against both Beng Koon and Rito. He prevailed in both these matches to set himself up for a classic semi finals encounter with Joey. This match ensured that we will be represented by at least a player from Regentville in the finals. Apollo managed to squeeze through to the finals with a victory against his regular hitting partner. It was difficult, as both players knew each others game so well. Both had big serves, huge forehands and single handed backhand drives.
The finals was a much anticipated encounter between the tournament top seed Danny who was undefeated enroute to the finals. He had defeated Carl in the earlier group match in a grueling tie breaker and was the tournament's top seed and the hot favorite to win the title. His last match against Apollo during the last Regentville versus Bullion Park friendly encounter ended in a 6-0 win. The finals started out nearly the same way, as Danny rushed to a 3-6 win to take the first set. The finals however was played in a best of 3 set format unlike the other stages where only one set was played. Apollo however had other ideas, taking the second set 6-3. The match had to go into a 3rd set rubber and a tantalizing tie breaker at 5-5. Apollo managed to come out victorious with a (6-4) win for the 2005 Bullion Open tennis title!
The Regentville Tennis Blog would like to congratulate Apollo on his victory as well as the tournament organizer Danny and both the Regentville and Bullion Park tennis players in making this event a success. Congratulations to Roman for winning the Class C Bullion Open title as well as Whitney from Regentville who came in as runners up.
